Back in the late 70's I went on a halloween night tour of the catacombs beneath the Lincoln Memorial. I'd almost forgotten about it. My memory is fuzzy about it; I was only 10 or so. Anyway... The catacombs extend quite a way (hundreds of feet) beyond the boundaries of the memorial. And yes, there are political cartoons. And some of the construction equipment (e.g. wheelbarrows) was right where the workers left it. Interestingly, rainwater has leached some of the (lime?) from the huge limestone pavilion in front. The catacombs have stalagtites and stalagmites.
